Transfer Credit Policies and Guidelines

General Undergraduate Transfer Credit Policies

  • Only credit from regionally accredited institutions is evaluated for transferability.
  • Students admitted in 2016 or later can take a maximum of 24 credits after being matriculated. Students are considered matriculated as of the first day of their first semester at Chapman.
  • Students are permitted to take a maximum of 6 credits of Pass/No Pass per academic year, including transfer credits. The 6 credits do not include Chapman coursework only offered as Pass/No Pass.
  • During regular semesters, students may enroll in a maximum of 18 credits. Enrollment in 18.5-21 credits, including transfer credits concurrently enrolled in at other institutions, requires at least a 3.000 Chapman cumulative GPA and completion of a minimum of 15 credits of graded coursework at Chapman. Students cannot exceed 21 credits per semester, including transfer credits.
  • Credit is given for baccalaureate courses excluding preparatory level, technical, vocational, professional, and work experience/co-op credits.
  • Minimum grade of C-.
  • A maximum of 70 semester credits of community college credit will be applied toward the bachelor’s degree.
  • No limit is placed on the number of transferable credits from regionally accredited four-year colleges or universities. A student, however, must meet all the credit, grade, and residence requirements as stated in the Undergraduate Degree Requirements section of the current Chapman University catalog.
  • No internship or practicum credit is accepted in transfer.
  • Independent Study and special topics credit in transfer are not automatically accepted. Materials detailing the content studied may be submitted for credit consideration.
  • Coursework may not duplicate or overlap other course credits.
  • CSU transferability does not guarantee the course will be transferable to Chapman.

Prospective Students Transfer Approval

Limitations of Credit

  • A maximum of 32 credits may be earned in passing courses by examination.
  • The maximum number of credits acceptable from two-year colleges is 70.
  • A maximum of 4 credits in physical activity and 12 credits in applied dramatic art and music ensembles will be counted toward the degree. This includes both transfer and Chapman credits combined. Athletic training, dance majors, and members of athletic teams may take up to 12 credits in activity courses toward their baccalaureate degrees.
  • No more than 32 credits will be awarded for dual credit (college work taken while concurrently enrolled in high school or GED program) or combined dual credit and AP or IB.
  • No more than 15 credits may be accepted of baccalaureate level correspondence, extension, or continuing education courses. Of these no more than 6 credits may apply toward GE and no more than 6 credit may apply toward the major.

General Education Equivalency

  • Transfer courses approved for direct equivalency with Chapman courses carry all GE and major approvals granted to the Chapman course.
  • Courses approved by the department as substitution for major or minor requirements are not automatically granted approval to GE or other programs using the course.

Lower Division Transfer Credit

Freshman or sophomore-level courses completed at another institution will not transfer as upper-division credit. Such courses may be approved to satisfy a specific upper division course requirement but the credit does not apply towards upper division credit totals.

Independent Study & Special Topics Credit

Independent Study and special topics credit in transfer are not automatically approved for transfer. Exceptions are granted on a case by case basis provided the credit is applicable towards specific degree requirements and has the recommendation of the academic department the content falls under. The request for approval will go through the Academic Council for consideration.

Credit Value

Chapman credit is calculated in semester hours. Transferable courses completed on the semester calendar transfer for the full credit value of the incoming course. This means a 5 credit language course that is equivalent to a 3 credit language course at Chapman will transfer for 5 semester credits. Schools that operate on other credit calendars and systems will have credit converted to semester values upon transfer. 

Quarter System Converted to Semester Credit

  • Credit from quarter system schools will be converted to semester hours.
  • One quarter unit is 2/3 value of one semester credit. See examples below.

Concurrent Enrollment Load Limit

Chapman students may complete transfer credit concurrently but may not exceed the course load limit as detailed in the Academic Policies and Procedures section of the current Chapman catalog. Students should consult with their Chapman academic advisor prior to registering for transfer coursework.

Course Equivalency

Transfer credit is assigned a course equivalency from one of three categories:

  1. DIRECT EQUIVALENCY: Transfer credit with direct equivalency with a Chapman course carries the same GE approvals as the Chapman course.
  2. GENERAL EQUIVALENCY: Transfer credit with general equivalency is assigned the equivalent subject code and an equivalent course level in either a lower division (100TR), or upper division (300TR) status. General equivalency is used when no direct equivalency exists, when a course has yet to be reviewed, when direct equivalency is denied by the department, or when proficiency is required by the department before transfer equivalency could be assigned.
  3. NOT TRANSFERABLE: Transfer courses that are not transferable are assigned TRAN-TR000, and do not meet Chapman’s general transfer policy requirements.

Pre-Approval & Re-Evaluation of Transfer Credit

Course approvals listed on the Search Transfer Approvals recourse do not override credit limitations or transfer policy. Current students are recommended to verify course transferability before taking any transfer course, even if it appears on the previously approved course list. Re-evaluation of transfer work is done at the request of the student. The request should include the course syllabus.

How to Apply – Transfer Students

Transfer Application Deadlines

Spring 2022 Deadline

Applications are due by October 15, 2021. Applications received after October 15 will be considered on a space-available basis. If you are interested in applying to a major within the departments of Art, Dance, Music, Theatre, or the Dodge College of Film & Media Arts, please email [email protected] prior to applying. 

Note that the academic majors of BFA Film Production, BFA Screen Acting and BFA Theatre Performance are not open to apply into for the spring. These are fall programs only.

Fall 2022 Deadline

Applications are due (postmarked) by February 15, 2022. Applications received after February 15 will be considered on a space-available basis. 

Application Steps and Requirements

We encourage scheduling a one-on-one meeting with an admission counselor before applying. We’ll review your coursework and plan your pathway to transfer. You can schedule a phone appointment by calling our office at (714) 997-6711.

Follow the steps below. Please only submit the University’s required documents.

Step 1: Start The Common App for transfer students and add Chapman University as a college within the app. Fill out both parts and submit your application.

  • Chapman University Questions are submitted along with your Common App. 
  • Chapman does not require all Common App forms at the point of application. The College Report Form, Secondary School Final Report and the Mid-Term Report are not required unless requested after an initial review of your application.

Step 2: Submit letter(s) of recommendation

  • Chapman requires one transfer letter of recommendation from all applicants, but will review up to two. The recommendation can be from an academic, personal or professional resource. Both can be submitted through the Common App.
  • Recommendation letters can be submitted via any of the following methods:
    • Sent via the Common App in Chapman’s Program Materials section
    • Mailed to the Office of Admission (see address under “Office of Admission Contacts” on this page)
    • Emailed to [email protected]
  • Letters not submitted via the Common App must include the applicant’s full legal name and date of birth.
  • If you are applying to a talent major and need to submit a Creative Supplement, we recommend submitting two letters, with one from someone that can speak to your creative abilities. While this isn’t required, it is highly encouraged.

Step 3: Pay application fee or submit a Fee Waiver Request

  • You must submit the $70 non-refundable application fee via the Common Application or select the fee waiver option if you meet the Common Application fee-waiver guidelines.
    • If you selected a fee waiver option that requires a supporting statement of economic need, your college counselor must approve your fee waiver request. They can submit their statement online or submit a form (with your Common Application ID number) by mail or via email to [email protected]. We require fee waiver approval prior to the review of your application.

Step 4: Submit official college transcripts

  • You must submit individual transcripts from all 2- and 4-year colleges you have attended or are currently attending. These will show any work completed and/or currently in progress.
    • Fall applicants: please wait to submit your official college transcripts until your final fall grades are posted after your winter break.
  • Official transcripts can be submitted either through the Common Application or sent directly from the applicant to Chapman via mail or email. Applicants are responsible for ordering transcripts. If ordering them to be mailed directly to Chapman, use the mailing address listed towards the top of this webpage. Some colleges have electronic options to order transcripts; as long as electronic transcripts are coming in from the college to Chapman they can be emailed to [email protected].
  • Unofficial college transcripts, or copies submitted directly from the applicant, will not complete your file for review.

Step 5: Submit official high school transcripts (if applicable)

You must submit an official final high school transcript or GED if you have completed less than 60 semester units or 90 quarter units at the time of your application submission.

Step 6: Submit AP and/or IB test scores (if applicable)

Submit AP and/or IB test scores if you completed these exams in high school. Many times these previous scores can potentially be used towards college credit, either in your major or within general education at Chapman. Step 7: Submit official college transcripts for any dual college enrollment you might have done while in high school (if applicable)

Step 8: Submit Creative Supplement (if applicable)

Applicants to academic majors within the colleges/departments below must also submit a Creative Supplement:

  • College of Performing Arts
  • Dodge College of Film and Media Arts
  • Department of Art (except Art History)

You can only submit your Creative Supplement after submitting your Common Application.

Step 9: Submit additional reports requested by Admission Committee (if applicable)

A College Officials Report and/or Mid-Term Report may be requested of certain applicants.

Step 10: Submit your FAFSA (if applying for financial aid)

If you plan on applying for need-based financial aid, then you should complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). Chapman’s code for the FAFSA is 001164.
