Pulp Biology

For over 50 years, from the 1950s until his death in 2002, oral pathologist Harold Stanley DDS, MS collected extracted teeth from across the world. Recently the histological archive was located at Nova Southeastern College of Dental Medicine. It is reportedly the largest and most compete histological archive in the world containing over 200,000 specimens and weighing more than 3 tons of teeth!

Dr. Stanley can be credited with establishing Oral Biology as the science we know today, prior to his efforts, the practice of dentistry and treatment planning had little regard for the biology of the oral tissues.

Dr. Stanley specialized in the soft tissue in the core of teeth called ‘pulp’. The pulp is responsible for creating tooth dentin and for maintaining the vitality of the tooth throughout life. It is also responsible for the pain experienced if the tooth is diseased or damaged, and also for hot and cold sensitivity.

Dr. Stanley studied pulp death and regeneration. The photograph opposite shows the ability of the pulp cells to mineralize more tooth substance in response to injury. The purpose of the increased mineralization is to protect the pulp tissue from disease, injury and trauma. Dr. Stanley also showed that the bacterial invasion of teeth could destroy the cells and cause a loss of tooth vitality. The invasion of tooth dentinal tubules by bacteria can be seen in the photograph opposite. The bacteria is present in the mouth saliva. If bacteria reaches the pulp it can cause severe inflammation called ‘pulpitis’. The pulpitis is normally painful and will require endodontic treatment. This involves the removal of the pulp and the cleaning and shaping of the root canals. The faculty and staff of Nova Southeastern are preparing the extensive histological archive of Dr. Stanley for on-line use. This will enable anyone to access his archive of teeth from anywhere in the world.

Stem Cells

Stem cells have the ability to continuously divide and differentiate (develop) into various other kinds of cells/tissues. All tissues originate from fetal stem cells. Recently adult stem cells have been identified with the ability to create new tissues. We investigate stem cells that are taken from donor adult tissues, we do not conduct any research using fetal stem cells. Tissue engineering is the creation of new replacement tissues Potential patients that could benefit from stem cell therapies (millions): Cardiovascular disease 58 Autoimmune diseases 30 Diabetes 16 Osteoporosis 10 Cancer 8.2 Alzheimer’s disease 4.5 Parkinson’s disease 1.5 Severe burns 0.3 Spinal cord injuries 0.25 Birth defects 0.15

Potential Therapies

Stem cells will be used as part of tissue engineering to create new tissues to replace diseased, missing and lost tissues: Disabled Accidents Cleft Palate Diabetes

Tissue Engineering

Tissue engineering is the creation of new tissues in the laboratory using stem cells, bioactive molecules and scaffolds. How we will use stem cells therapeutically: 1.Isolate stem cells from blood transfusion or cell culture (flow cytometer) 2.Proliferate the cells in culture using growth factors 3. Grow the cells around scaffold materials 4.Create organ culture conditions for a specific cell and tissue type 5.Transplant the new replacement tissues into patients

Elderly Oral Health

The incidence of diseases, and oral problems in the elderly requiring dental treatment is uncertain. In this study, the oral health of 265 South Florida nursing home residents aged between 45 and 98 years was assessed. The levels of tooth loss, oral hygiene scores, oral status, and the status of existing dentures are summarized.

Nova Southeastern University Dental School Ranking

Nova Southeastern University (NSU) is a private, non-profit institution and the largest and fastest-growing medical and health sciences university in Florida. The College of Dental Medicine (CDM) is accredited by the American Dental Association (ADA) and affiliated with academic institutions throughout the world.

U.S. News & World Report ranked Nova Southeastern University (NSU) within their 2018 list of top 200 “Best Colleges.”  NSU is officially ranked at number 198 for National Universities (up 16 spots). This is the second time this year that the university was ranked by U.S. News and World Report. In January, the magazine recognized three NSU online programs. NSU’s Criminal Justice graduate program was ranked 26th out of 41 programs; its Education graduate program was 84th out of approximately 200 (up 11 spots); and its Nursing graduate program was 47th out of more than 100 ranked programs (up two spots).

“We are extremely proud to be listed in U.S. News & World Report’s top 200 Best Colleges. These rankings show that we’re recognized as a premier, private, not-for-profit university of quality and distinction,” said NSU’s President Dr. George Hanbury.

The U.S. News & World Report rankings are based on several key measures of quality including graduation and retention rates, assessment of excellence and student selectivity. Scores for each measure are weighted to arrive at a final overall score.

NSU has also made the list for A-plus schools for B students for the first time.

U.S. News & World Report screened colleges and universities to identify those where “non-superstar” students have an opportunity at being accepted and thriving – where spirit and hard work could make all the difference to the admissions office. To make this list, schools had to admit a meaningful proportion of applicants whose test scores and class standing put them in “non-A territory.”

About Nova Southeastern University (NSU): Located in beautiful Fort Lauderdale, Florida, Nova Southeastern University (NSU) is a dynamic research institution dedicated to providing high-quality educational programs at the undergraduate, graduate, and first-professional degree levels. A private, not-for-profit institution, NSU has campuses in Fort Lauderdale, Fort Myers, Jacksonville, Miami, Miramar, Orlando, Palm Beach, and Tampa, Florida, as well as San Juan, Puerto Rico, while maintaining a presence online globally. For more than 50 years, NSU has been awarding degrees in a wide range of fields, while fostering groundbreaking research and an impactful commitment to community. Classified as a research university with “high research activity” by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching, NSU is 1 of only 50 universities nationwide to also be awarded Carnegie’s Community Engagement Classification, and is also the largest private, not-for-profit institution in the United States that meets the U.S. Department of Education’s criteria as a Hispanic-serving Institution. NSU Dental School Acceptance Rate – CollegeLearners

The Nova Southeastern University College of Dental Medicine is the first private dental college established in Florida. It is also the first dental college in the US to be established in partnership with a College of Osteopathic Medicine.

NSU is a top-rated university, giving students outstanding value in education and leaving a sizable economic impact on Florida. NSU ranks first in awarding doctoral degrees to minorities and is a top performer in social mobility rankings.

Like the best dental schools, NSU Dental combines rigorous and comprehensive coursework with intensive field experience. In the first two years, students gain knowledge in anatomy, public health, oral histology, dental biomaterials, comprehensive treatment planning, and electronic health record training, among other things. In the third and fourth years, coursework is interspersed with extramural clinical rotations.

With patient care at the heart of training, NSU’s dental clinics are among the best in teaching and patient service. Students work alongside experienced dentists to ensure excellent patient care and student training. Not only do students develop the clinical skills needed for a successful dental practice, they also provide much-needed dental services to underserved communities through these rotations.

NSU dental students most commonly attend rotations at HIV Clinics, community health centers, special needs clinics, and pediatric centers. Students will get a broader understanding of various factors that affect patient dental health and care, including socio-economic and cultural factors.

The Dental College’s humanitarian streak reaches beyond the clinic. Community outreach efforts have been wide-ranging: Give Kids A Smile Day, oral health education, Florida Mission of Mercy, and international missions.

What about the quality of the programs? A prospective student will be glad to learn that some of NSU’s dental programs have garnered an excellent reputation. The Department of Endodontics, for example, received research and diplomate awards at the 2019 American Association of Endodontics annual meeting.

An acceptance rate of a mere 3.7% suggests that many aspiring dentists are clamoring to get into this high-quality school.

In total, 23 dentistry programs around the world have improved in rank while 30 have declined and six remain unchanged. The United States leads by number of top-20 departments with five, followed by the United Kingdom and Sweden with three. However, the best-performing location by number of top-20 faculties per ranked institution is Sweden.

Two of the world’s most improved dentistry faculties are American – both Columbia University and The Ohio State University climb 14 places to sit 27th and 37th respectively.

Ben Sowter, QS Research Director, said: “Dentistry is a surprisingly variable ranking, even within the Top 10. For example, institutions such as Karolinska Institute and University of Malmo shoot up the ranking this year.”

Sowter added: “Also of note, is that niche institutions shine in ways that are uncommon in other subject rankings – with the Academic Centre for Dentistry Amsterdam taking second place and Tokyo Medical and Dental University taking sixth. Interestingly, the University of Sao Paolo is the world’s largest producer of academic papers in dentistry, but this is not reflected in its reputation performance.”

The rankings, compiled by global higher education analysts QS Quacquarelli Symonds, provide an independent comparative analysis on the performance of  15,200 individual university programs,  taken by students at  1543 universities in  88 locations across the world,  across 51 academic disciplines and five broad faculty Areas.  They are part of the annual QS World University Rankings portfolio, which was consulted over 147 million times in 2021 on www.TopUniversities.com and covered 96,000 times by media and institutions.
