Transfer Credits
We want to reward the hard work youโve done in high school or college. Which is why, after you have been admitted, your NYU school, college, or department will determine which of your previous courses will carry over. Typically, we award the following credit amounts:
- First-Year Students: Up to 32 credits
- Transfers: Up to 64 credits
After you are admitted, the school, college, or department that admits you will determine how many college and high school (if applicable) credits will carry over.
Credits/points obtained through a certificate program or a vocational training program will not likely transfer to NYU.
High School Courses
A note about advanced standing credit and COVID-19: We will be granting credit as normal for AP, IB, & A-Level exams taken in spring 2020. Refer to the guidelines below for information on receiving credit.
AP credit/advanced standing may be awarded if:
- Received scores of 4 or 5
- Tests taken before graduation
IB credit/advanced standing may be awarded if:
- Received scores of 6 or 7 on higher level exams
- Tests taken before graduation
Note: Results must be sent directly from the College Board (NYU code is 2562) or the International Baccalaureate Organization.
College/University Courses
If you took college courses while still in high school or while attending another university or college, weโll need to see all transcripts to determine how many credits carry over to NYU. Contact your NYU school, college, or department of interest for their specific requirements for awarding credit. Below is a guide of what you might expect to receive credit for.
College Courses Taken While in High School
Credit may be awarded if:
- You received a grade of โBโ or better
- NYU offers corresponding courses
- In most cases, courses were taken at a college/university, with college/university students, and taught by college/university faculty.
- Courses were not used to satisfy high school graduation requirements
College Courses Taken After High School
Credit may be awarded if:
- Received a grade of โCโ or better
- Courses have been taken within last 10 years
- Courses were not โPass/Failโ
- In most cases, courses were taken at a college/university, with college/university students, and taught by college/university faculty (online courses evaluated on case-by-case basis).
- For Spring 2020 courses only: Given COVID-19-related disruptions, the following exceptions will be made to NYU policy:
- Courses taken on a Pass/Fail basis (or for which other non-A-F grades were awarded as exceptions to standard academic policy) can be transferred for credit towards the NYU degree, provided that there is a transcript notation or a letter from the institution confirming that the Pass or other non-A-F grade is equivalent to a C-minus or higher; the minimum A-F grade for transfer eligibility is C-minus.
Transfer Students
Please keep in mind that:
- Once enrolled at NYU, expect to take at least 64 additional credits to earn a bachelorโs degree.
- In some cases, NYU Steinhardt may accept up to 72 transfer credits. This does not apply to other NYU schools and colleges.
- Generally, we donโt award credit for life experiences, such as work, internships, and military service.
- After youโre admitted to NYU, youโll be able to go online to see a preliminary statement of how much credit youโre likely to be awarded.
- Your NYU school, college, or department has final say on which credits will be honored.
Other NYU Campuses
NYU Abu Dhabi and NYU Shanghai do not offer credit for any examinations or previous coursework.
Nyu Transfer Requirements From Community College
To be a successful transfer to NYU, remember that the actions you take while at community college are what will convinceย NYU transfer admissionsย to either accept or reject your application. Sure enough, if you’ve met all the transfer requirements, deadlines and credits, your chances of getting into New York University will be much higher than the average NYU transfer acceptance rate. But, your ultimate transfer decision depends on your community college experience, which is great news for anyone who didn’t do so hot in High School (like me).

Transferring To NYU Stern, Tisch, Gallatin, CAS, Steinhardt Schools
Like any other major university, transfer students have the opportunity to apply to a specific school at New York University. The most popular schools are the New York University Leonard N. Stern School of Business (where I graduated from) and the Tisch School of the Arts, but they are usually the most expensive too.
Here is a brief description for popular NYU transfer student options:
- NYU Stern Transfer – For students majoring in business, especially finance, accounting, management and international business.
- NYU Tisch Transfer – For students in performing arts, most widely known for film production and broadway connections.
- NYU Gallatin Transfer – For students who are ready to create their own major, holding a strong passion and independence to study disciplines without boundaries.
- NYU CAS Transfer – For students desiring to continue a liberal arts and sciences education, highly demanded by pre-med students.
- NYU Steinhardt Transfer – For students transferring into many culture related fields like education, communications and music.
Fun fact: If you walk around campus (from building to building) and talk to a few NYU students, you might hear them refer to Stern students as “Sternies” and Tisch students as “Tischies” because of the strong stereotypes associated with students in each school.
Top 5 NYU Transfer Requirements
The New York University transfer requirements include a variety of factors that will make up your application. These factors include a solid GPA, minimum number of credits, required deadlines, submitted standardized test scores, and a killer application essay. In addition to community college tips, these are the most important factos and each can help you “make the cut” for the transfer admissions committee.
What Is A Good NYU Transfer GPA?
Whether you’re transferring to NYU from community college or a 4 year college, your GPA should be as competitive as possible. Working hard to earn a 4.0 GPA should be your primary concern before applying. If you’re above a 3.5 GPA you’re at a collegiate level. I would consider that to be the minimum, but students have been accepted with lower GPA’s.
What’s The Minimum Number of Transfer Credits?
To transfer to NYU, you’ll have to had completed a minimum number of 30 or 32 course credits, which is equivalent to one year of college course work. Although, this is the minimum, I recommend transferring the maximum number of credits, which is 64 credits, because you’ll enter NYU as a junior transfer student. Also, transferring as a junior will save you lots of tuition money that you could spend somewhere else and you’ll still have a great experience.
What Are The Required Deadlines?
Unless you really want to be a NYU spring transfer, (which I do not recommend unless you really need to get out of the current situation you’re in), the application deadline for Fall semester admission is April 1st. This is slightly later than most university transfer admission deadlines so don’t take it as a standard for all schools. The extra time is kind of nice to tweak and improve your application further.
What Standardized Tests Are Required?
If you’ll have already completed a full course work of college courses, in the United States, then you’re exempt from submitting standardized test scores to NYU. However, I had retaken my SATs in community college and submitted them anyway. Strong SAT scores should not be underestimated. I encourage you to retake them if you need to and submit high scores.
What Is Required For The Transfer Essay?
For almost all NYU schools, you will be submitting your application via the Common App, which also has a specific supplement for NYU. These are time consuming and require a lot of research, but it’s well worth filling it all out. And you have to, so why not do your best?
The requirements will all help you transfer to NYU Stern, Tisch, Gallatin or the other popular schools like CAS and Steinhardt. However, these schools are expensive. So next, I want to give you some insightful information about NYU transfer scholarships before revealing my proven plan for transferring!

nyu tandon transfer acceptance rate
The New York University Tandon School of Engineering is the engineering and applied sciences school of New York University. Tandon is the second oldest private engineering and technology school in the United States. NYU has been around since 1831 and is able to attract great professors and students and to secure research funding for the faculty. There is a great atmosphere there that contributes to the prestigious perception of the institution.
The school was renamed in 2015 in honor of NYU Trustees Chandrika and Ranjan Tandon following their donation of $100 million to the school. The school’s main campus is in Brooklyn’s MetroTech Center, an urban academic-industrial research park.
Although NYU is not an Ivy League school, it is often considered on par with the Ivies due to academics, research, and athletic prestige. They have amazing professors and spend a lot of money on them. Tandon is ranked #38 in best engineering schools in USNews and #25 in world university rankings.
NYU’s reputation as a global education leader with a world-class faculty and state-of-the-art labs producing groundbreaking research makes the School of Engineering the perfect place to pursue your degree. This means the school is extremely selective. Meeting their GPA requirements and SAT/ACT requirements is very important to getting past their first round of filters and proving your academic preparation.
More than 11,000 NYU students live in 23 residence halls, most of which are found in famed Greenwich Village. Two halls are also in the incredibly diverse and hip community of Brooklyn Heights, near the NYU Tandon School of Engineering.
NYU Tandon moved up 42 spots since 2009 in U.S. News and World Report. Women make up 46% of the Tandon Class of 2023, more than double the national average for all undergrad engineering schools. 30% of our students are first in their families to attend college. Research expenditures rose 471% over the last decade.
