The faculty of medicine offers undergraduate and postgraduate programs in medicine and related fields. The entry requirements for the faculty of medicine vary depending on the program you are applying for. To apply for an undergraduate degree in medicine, you must have completed Year 12 or equivalent qualifications (e.g., HSC). If you’re an international student applying to study at UNSW Medicine, you’ll be ranked on the following criteria:
- Academic Merit
- Admission Tests (ISAT or UCAT)
- An interview with UNSW Medicine
UNSW Medicine will combine these three measures to rank all applicants. Applicants are selected based on the highest rank determined by all three measures. We do not average scores, which means a high score in one area will not compensate for a low score in another.
Academic Merit
Secondary School & High School Students

UNSW Foundation Studies Students
UNSW Foundation Studies is an alternative entry pathway to study at UNSW. This program prepares students for the academic demands of studying at UNSW, including UNSW Medicine.
Consideration for entry into a medicine degree program requires a minimum GPA of 9.0 in the Life Sciences stream of the UNSW Foundation Course.
UNSW Medicine will also consider Foundation Studies results from the ‘Group of Eight’ (G08) Universities. If you’ve completed your foundation studies at a non GO8 university, you’ll need to complete at least one full-time year of university study for consideration.
University Students & Graduates
If you’ve completed at least one year of university study in the year prior to your desired commencement, you’ll be assessed on both your secondary school results and university study results. The following minimum criteria applies:
– Secondary school qualification component must reach 96.00 ATAR of equivalent AND
– Tertiary study component must reach WAM 70 or equivalent
Once the applicant has met the minimum requirement, the “BEST OF” algorithm would apply and the qualification with a higher selection rank would be used as a final selection rank for medicine admissions purposes.
If you haven’t completed at least 0.75 of one year of full-time equivalent university study by the end of the year preceding your potential start, you’ll only be assessed on your final secondary school qualification.
Admission Tests
As of 2021, UNSW will allow students to undertake either the ISAT or UCAT as part of its entry requirements.
The International Student Admission Test (ISAT)
The ISAT is a general aptitude test that measures critical and quantitative reasoning. The 3-hour test can be taken at testing centres around the world. Testing is available in pre-determined test cycles which you can find on Important Dates.

The University Clinical Aptitude Test (UCAT)
The UCAT is a two-hour computer-based test. The test assesses a range of abilities through five separately timed sub-tests. You’ll be tested on Verbal Reasoning, Decision Making, Quantitative Reasoning, Abstract Reasoning and Situational Judgement, each containing several multiple-choice questions.

Interview
If your application reaches the interview stage, you’ll be invited to take part in an interview with a panel of two interviewers. Interviews can be completed via Skype, Zoom, face-to-face or, in some circumstances, via telephone. The interview covers a wide range of relevant issues to determine your suitability for study at UNSW Medicine. Interviews commence in April and continue throughout the year for the next year’s Term 1 commencement.
Interviews are offered based on your predicted or actual academic merit. You must submit the faculty Medicine Application Form via the Medicine Application Portal (MAP) by the deadline to be considered for an interview.
