Safety Manual

Revised February 2020

This is the online Safety Manual for the School of Electrical Engineering and Computing at the University of Newcastle, Australia. This manual was produced in response to requirements of the NSW Occupational Health and Safety Act, relevant Regulations, and the various WHS Policies of The University of Newcastle.

The School of Electrical Engineering and Computing:

  • is committed to providing an integrated system of safety incorporating instruction, examination and review to ensure a safe and productive laboratory environment for its staff, students and visitors.
  • recognises the requirements and obligations of the N. S.W. Occupational Health and Safety Act and accompanying Regulations, actively seeks to comply with them, and welcomes feedback and advice on its practices and procedures.
  • will strictly enforce all of the procedures set down for safe working in its laboratories, and will deny access to persons who do not comply with those procedures.
  • views the opportunity of working unsupervised in its laboratories as a privilege, and not as a right.

WHS Goals for 2020:

  • All academic, technical and administrative staff within the School of Electrical Engineering & Computing will complete the Lab Induction.
  • At least 2 inspections of laboratories will be conducted during the calendar year.

Bachelor Programs

Bachelor of Information technology

The Bachelor of IT equips students for careers in the ICT sector, particularly in the development and implementation of commercial applications. There is a core of courses that provide a base of skills including fundamentals of information systems, database design, programming, project management, plus others. There are three majors of which students must complete one and may complete two. One major is focussed on applications development, another focussed on business systems and the final major is about the production and use of digtial media.

The Master of Information Technology will have you study Internet communications, strategic business systems, database management, systems analysis and information systems implementation. As well as providing foundation IT skills for entrants with limited IT experience, the MIT program provides opportunities for experienced IT professionals to enhance and apply their skills within emerging technology driven growth areas including business, data analytics, and entrepreneurship.
